The Pillars of The Earth

The Pillars of the Earth is a historical novel by Ken Follett published in 1989 about the building of a cathedral in the fictional town of Kingsbridge, England. It is set in the middle of the 12th century, primarily during the Anarchy, between the time of the sinking of the White Ship and the murder of Thomas Becket.

The book traces the development of Gothic architecture out of the preceding Romanesque architecture and the fortunes of the Kingsbridge priory against the backdrop of actual historical events of the time.

Before this novel was published, Follett was known for writing in the thriller genre. The Pillars of the Earth became his best-selling work. The book was listed at no. 33 on the BBC's Big Read, a 2003 survey with the goal of finding the "nation's best-loved book." The book was also selected for Oprah's Book Club in 2007. A sequel, entitled World Without End, was released in October 2007. (copied from Wikipedia)

The Pillars of the Earth is set against a backdrop of war, religious strife and power struggles which tears lives and families apart. In that time, there rises a magnificent Cathedral in Kingsbridge. Against the backdrop, love-stories entwine: Tom, the master builder, Aliena, the noblewoman, the sadistic Lord William, Philip, the prior of Kingsbridge, Jack, the artist in stone work and Ellen, the woman from the forest who casts a curse. At once, this is a sensuous and enduring love story and an epic that shines with the fierce spirit of a passionate age. Follett masterfully weaves these stories through political turmoil of 12th century England, creating a relevant and viable world for today's audience and for generations to come.

This mini-series just hooked me up for sleepless nights in order for me to finish the whole series. For more information, you can visit their official website at
Highly recommended! ^^

Solitaire Man

Ben Kalman is aging: he has heart problems, his marriage is over, he's lost a fortune after being caught cutting corners in his East Coast car business, and he's sleeping with as many women as possible - the younger the better. He's chosen his current girlfriend, Jordan, because her father can help him get a new auto dealership; she's asked him to escort her daughter, Allyson, 18, on a visit to a Boston college campus. He behaves badly, and there are consequences to his love life, his finances, and his relationship with his daughter and grandson. Is there anywhere he can turn? Written by Wikipedia     WikiepWi

Slept with one of his grandson's classmate's mother which really pissed his daughter off.

His ex-wife. The one who never give up on him.

This movie is a bit slow. The story is about this man who really sleeps around which I never like the idea at all. However, in the end, he has to admit that he is getting old and continue to behave as such an asshole really lead her nowhere. The ending is quite annoying. Well, if you are good in body language, you will know where he is heading to. ^^

127 Hours

Another nice movie to introduce to you. 127 hours. I don't know how did this mountain climber Aron Ralston did it in real life. He must be very strong minded because for me, I would probably bang my head and kill myself in such situation. Are you as strong as him too?

127 Hours is the true story of mountain climber Aron Ralston's remarkable adventure to save himself after a fallen boulder crashes on his arm and traps him in an isolated canyon in Utah.

A cute picture he took for himself after he fell down from the bike.

Over the next five days Ralston examines his life and survives the elements to finally discover he has the courage and the wherewithal to extricate himself by any means necessary, scale a 65 foot wall and hike over eight miles before he is finally rescued.

Throughout his journey, Ralston recalls friends, lovers, family, and the two hikers he met before his accident. Will they be the last two people he ever had the chance to meet? Written by Fox Searchlight Pictures

I am a person who doesn't know how to express love well, except to children. Maybe the children are simpler and pure to me, which I never ask for return. Seeing them happy, learned and being loved, I feel satisfy within me. For all these years, due to my profession, I have met and taught many types of children. Some are very active and some are very quiet. All of them have different learning method and I wish I have enough time for each of them as I believe all kids can be taught well. Even ADHD, ADD or autistic children.

That night, I went to my neighbor's place with my husband. The kids are very active. While we were chatting with the mother, the eldest son (3-year-old) climbed up to the sofa, standing without support, and tried to reach the painting and clock on the wall. The younger sis who is going to be 2-year-old followed. The mother was feeding a baby in her arm, shouted at the children. I quickly went to them, carried the girl, make sure she 'landed' safely on the ground and tried to convince the boy to come down.

I wasn't feeling well that time, back was aching as usual and I know I don't have the strength to carry the boy down as he might struggle if he refused to. So I talked to him nicely, convinced him by telling him what will happen if he falls down from the sofa. The boy turned and looked at me in the eyes, then he came down and mumbled a lot which we all couldn't understand. His mother kept telling me that he has problem in expressing himself as he can't speak clearly.

The boy talked to me and I continued to have eye contact with him. I nodded my head, replied by agreeing what he said and at the same time I was trying hard to catch his words. He talked more when he saw me 'understand' his words. Slowly, I got to get his point that he was trying to tell me he had bumped his head from falling before and it was painful.

I told him to sit next to me on the floor and chat. He did it but after a few minutes, he stood up, wanted to do 'something else'. I quickly told him to sing songs to me. (Tried to get him distracted before he goes for other exciting 'games' again.) He ran away after that. I thought he must be feeling shy but suddenly I heard him singing behind the wall, peeping at me. I praised him and let him finished the ABC song. With my encouragement, he walked nearer to me and continued to sing with a louder voice. I clapped and praised him after he had finished. From his eyes, I can see the joy beneath him. He became more confident and stood in front of me eventually, continue to sing ABC repeatedly. I told him to sing other songs, and he did. He sang many nursery songs he had learned in school and I found out that he can sing and pronounced the words clearly while singing but not in talking.

If his parents want my help in guiding him, I believe I can make him speak out better and learn more things than the school. His father has to work outstation and can only be with the family 5 days in a month. Whereas the mother has to look after 3 young ones, she barely has the time to stimulate this boy's brain. He is so energetic and love to explore. Same as the 2nd girl, who looks braver than the brother and very strong in her motor skills.

The children reminds me of my days at my learning centre. I miss my students, the children and the adult. I believe it's God's will to let me be away from my centre so that I can have more time with my own family as I'm such a workaholic. Other than my own child, I have no idea whether I still have the chance to teach other children again.

My mother has been coughing badly for about 3.5 months. She had visited many doctors, went for x-ray but found nothing. Her cough didn't get better but worse after taking all the antibiotics, pills, even inhaler from the doctors. Then my father decided to bring her to do a proper checkup in Singapore after failing to get the specialist at Normah hospital (as the doctors were either on leave or not available during CNY).

Within one day, the doctor at Mount Elizabeth Hospital., Singapore did a CT scan and found out there was a bone embedded in her lung. She did her scope twice and her lung collapsed after the procedure. Her lung went swollen and caused her unable to breath. My sister told me that my mother suffered and lost a lot of blood. We were so worried and kept praying that she will be fine.

My eldest sister kept keeping us updated with my mother's condition through email. In my reply, I always typed that I believe mum will be alright with confidence.

God knows that I was very worry but I kept telling myself and believing that she will be fine. I remember the book - Law of Attraction. We need to have positive thoughts to attract the positive outcome. When we believe the positive result already happened, it will happened eventually as that is how the law of attraction works!

I prayed to God that I wish to live shorter to let my mother live longer that night. A sound asked " You have been using the same prayers for your grandpa, father and now mother whenever they are very ill, how many years do you think you have in this life?"
I told the sound "I have no idea how many years I have left but I just wish my family can live longer & healthier than me. Then that is more than enough. "
When I opened my eyes, my princess was looking at me closely with her big rounded eyes.I gave her a kiss and a hug with guilt inside me.

I have no idea whether my genuine prayers work or not but praise the Lord that my mother has recovered and discharged from the hospital. The doctor said she will be fully recovered in 3-4 months time.

On the same day, I went to the hospital for getting a x-ray done for myself. After the radiologist saw the x-ray film, I was told to get CT scan done. When the CT scan result came out, the orthopedic advised me to do a blood test. After a few days, if my condition is not improving, I will have to do MRI scan.

No matter how the result will be, I would like to thank God for reminding me that it's time for me to cherish the people around more.

Today, I just slowed down my pace and learn to appreciate things I have been ignoring all these time. I thought I will only do that after many years but seems like I'm doing it earlier. I think this is life. I wish that when the day arrive, I can tell myself that I have no worries and burden at all. Everything will be in good hands and I'm ready to go.

p/s: My cousin scolded, "How can you have such prayers. Don't you know that you are no longer alone? You have your princess? You want her to grow up without your presence?"
My sisters also scolded, "Do you want your daughter to be ill-treated by her step-mother?"

Well, what can I do? I believe in destiny. I can only do so little when I'm still around. When I'm gone, I can only bless my family with all my heart. Life is unpredictable and we are here for temporary stage play. Just have faith in God and everything will be fine.

I love you, daddy!
I love you, mummy!
I love you, Winnie, Gladys, Ervinna, Cliff and Irene (Jia En & Jia Yao)!
I love you, hubby!
I love you, princess!
I love you all, my friends!
Thank you for being with me all these years! Because of your presence, I can be who I am!

My beloved grandpa

When I was young, my parents were busy working and I had spent my wonderful childhood with my grandparents. They loved me and took care of me very well!

I remembered before I started schooling, I already worried that my grandpa wouldn't be able to accompany me for long. He kept telling me that he will die one day and I have to learn how to take care of myself.

My grandpa was always the first person who welcomed me home from school. Whenever I fell down, injured and bled, he will be the one who makes me feel better. I love to chat with him, listen to his lecture or stories and I will tell him many silly things to make him laughed.

I wanted him to live forever! That's my greatest wish since young.

I told God, "I know my wish is impossible, as sooner or later a human being must die, but..."
I negotiated in my prayer "I'm willing to live shorter so that my grandpa can live longer. As long as possible!" I prayed.
"At least, long enough to see me getting married and have children. I wanted to earn lots of money and bring him to travel too!" I prayed genuinely almost everyday and night whenever I can remember.
I wrote down many wishes of mine in a booklet, reminded myself so that I can achieved them to make my grandpa feel proud.

My grandpa loves to drink beer and wine before dinner in every evening. He will sit at the front yard, looking at the cars and people passed by, sipping his drink slowly. He told me that is the most enjoyable moment throughout the day.

Since I was 9 years old, I will always accompany him at the front yard and kept asking him lots of questions so that he can start telling me the stories of his life. At the same time, I will try to sip his beer or wine, saying that I must learn how to drink so that I wouldn't get drunk easily in future. He will stop me if I drank too much. I never like those liquid but I pretended to love them. It tasted bitter but I never admit that. I just love to see how my grandpa stopped me from drinking too much (more than 1 sip at a time) and I felt it was very funny!

For all his life, he had been suffered a lot. Not only the time when he was brought up by a single mother in China, he was forced to leave his family, traveled alone from China to Malaysia for living by ship. He also had to go through the days where Japanese soldiers caught him to work and threatened to kill him when the soldiers were in bad mood or drunk. His wife (my grandma) passed away when he was away from work and failed to see her before she was buried.

Every time when he told me about his stories, his eyes were full of tears. I felt sorry for him and I could felt his pain strongly. He said, he felt thankful to have such a good life now with my parents. He felt happy that he can cooked for the family (he was a wonderful chef who always cooked my favorite dishes) and enjoyed evening sip everyday. He was contented and said he asked for nothing more. I didn't really understand at that time because for me, I had many dreams and I wanted to give him so-called a better life!

When I was studying in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, I learned to save my pocket money so that I could buy him wine at the airport. I always remember the brands of wine he likes and tried my best to make him happy. I started to do part time job during my 2nd year of uni so that I could afford my air tickets and the wine.

I knew he was aging and I still had years to go before I could graduate and start working to earn wages. Deep down in my heart, I always prayed to God that I wish to shorten my life so that my grandpa can live longer. I never want to lose him as I love him very, very much! (I know it sounds very silly and many of you will comment that prayers doesn't work in such a way. I totally understand but I just felt helpless whenever I knew he was unwell.)

My grandpa passed away when I was job hunting in KL after I graduated. I got the news when I was waiting for my flight at KLIA airport, praying to God that I wished I could die at that time so that my grandpa could survived. That night, I cried in the washroom several times before the flight departed. And my tears just couldn't stop flowing down when I was in the plane. The passengers besides me must have thought that I was crazy because I couldn't control my emotion for that 2 hours flight.

He was lying in the bed at the living room when I arrived. His hands were cold and I kept telling him that I was back. I tried to use my palms to warm up his cold limbs. I kept telling him that I love him so much! Told him not to be worried as I will take care of myself well and also my family.

Until now, the pain of losing him has never heal but I know he will always be in my heart!

Grandpa, I will never forget all the stories, teaching and love you had given me.

I love you, grandpa! I feel so lucky and blessed to be your granddaughter. May you rest in peace!

Never Let Me Go

Never Let Me Go is a 2010 British dystopian drama film based on the 2005 novel of the same name written by Kazuo Ishiguro.

The movie was directed by Mark Romanek from a screenplay written by Alex Garland.

It stars Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield. Never Let Me Go centers on Kathy, Ruth and Tommy, played respectively by Mulligan, Knightley and Garfield, who become entangled in a love triangle and are scientific specimens, created in a laboratory and raised in order to provide their organs to severely ill patients.

Never Let Me Go premiered at the 37th annual Telluride Film Festival in September 2010, where the audience positively responded to its message. The movie has since been screened at a number of festivals, including the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival as well as opening the 54th London Film Festival. It was distributed theatrically by Fox Searchlight Pictures in the United States on 15 September 2010, where it was given a limited release. Other release dates for the movie include a 14 January 2011, date for the United Kingdom. In the US, playing at four theatres, Never Let Me Go grossed over $111,000 in its opening weekend. As the number of theaters it played at began to expand, it continued to make more money each week, going to earn over $800,000 in total in the United States. Never Let Me Go was met with generally positive reviews from film critics, with most reviewers praising the cast's overall performances.

Kathy (Mulligan), Tommy (Garfield) and Ruth (Knightley) live in a world and a time that feel familiar to us, but is not quite like anything we know. They spend their childhood at Hailsham, a seemingly idyllic English boarding school.

When they leave the shelter of the school and the terrible truth of their fate is revealed to them, they must also confront their deep feelings of love, jealousy and betrayal that threaten to pull them apart.

The film is narrated by 28-year-old Kathy H. as she reminisces about her childhood at Hailsham, as well as her adult life after leaving the school. The story takes place in a dystopian Britain, in which human beings are cloned to provide donor organs for transplants. Kathy and her classmates have been created to be donors, though the adult Kathy is temporarily working as a "carer", someone who supports and comforts donors as they are made to give up their organs and, eventually, submit to death. As in Ishiguro’s other works, the truth of the matter is made clear only gradually, via veiled but suggestive language and situations. Both Ruth and Tommy die.

The film is divided into multiple parts, chronicling phases in the lives of its main characters.

A sad and touching love story.

I remembered when I was young, I always thought that if the guy really loves me, (and I like/love him too), even though there might be another woman who go after this guy, he will eventually choose me. In the end, just like in the movie, I was wrong all the time. Although their relationship didn't last long, it just proved that those men I loved before are too easily being tempted in many situations.

My hubby said, guy will easily be manipulated or moved by the 'active' woman. Compare to the quiet and 'passive' woman they admired, it seems like the 'active' one is easier to get (as they already offered themselves to the men) and make them think that she is the one.

My sister also told me before that, it is like tempting a hungry man with a fried chicken drumstick everyday. Sooner or later he will take a bite when nobody is around. Hmm...this will fit in those who have affair, I think.

In Mandarin, there's a saying "男追女隔重山,女追男隔重纱". Obviously, it is easier for a woman to go after a man comparing for a man to go after a woman.

However, I believe in destiny. We should learn how to cherish the man/woman we are having now. Life is short. Have you shown your love to your loved one today?!

The Despicable Me

The movie begins with the news revealing that an Egyptian pyramid was stolen. When super-villain Gru hears of this, his pride is wounded and he plans to pull the biggest heist of the century by stealing the Moon.
Gru tries to get a loan from the Bank of Evil (which a sign notes tongue-in-cheek was "Formerly Lehman Brothers") and meets a young super-villain, Vector, who annoys him.

Vector, I love his house. ^^

Bank president Mr. Perkins  refuses to grant Gru the loan until he obtains the shrink ray necessary for the plan. Mr. Perkins tells Gru that he is getting too old and that new super-villains are younger and better, like Vector, who is revealed to be the one who stole the Pyramid of Giza.

Gru and his minions steal the shrink ray from a secret lab in East Asia, but Vector steals it from him and shrinks his ship. Gru attempts to get the shrink ray back from Vector's lair, but all his attempts to enter the lair prove futile. After seeing three orphaned girls, Margo, Edith, and Agnes enter the lair to sell cookies to Vector, Gru adopts the girls from Miss Hattie, the head of the orphanage, to use them to steal back the shrink ray. Gru has his assistant Dr. Nefario build robots disguised as cookies. He then has the girls sell the robots to Vector, and the robots help Gru steal the shrink ray.

On the way home the girls ask to go to an amusement park. Gru agrees, intending to leave the girls there. Instead, the attendant says he, as an adult, has to ride the roller coaster with them. Gru ends up having fun with the girls. Back at home, he presents his plan to Mr. Perkins via video. The girls keep interrupting him. Perkins again refuses to give him the loan, claiming that although he doesn't have a problem with the plan, he just wants a younger villain to do it instead. Gru has a flashback of his childhood, depicting his wanting to go to the moon after seeing the first moon landing. When he tried to impress his mother with models of the rocket (and an actual working one), she just ignored him. Mr. Perkins calls Vector (revealed to be his son, whose real name is Victor) to the Bank of Evil to inform him that Gru has the shrink ray. Vector reassures his father that he will get the Moon. Gru almost abandons his plan due to lack of funds, but the girls and the minions take up a collection to keep it going.

However, Gru has to make a choice, because the moon will be in the optimal position for the heist on the same day as the girls' ballet recital. Dr. Nefario, seeing the girls as a distraction, contacts Miss Hattie, who arrives to take the girls back. Gru, the Minions, and the girls are heartbroken. Gru goes on with his plan and flies to the moon.

Gru successfully shrinks and pockets the Moon. Gru remembers the ballet recital and rushes to it. However, it has ended by the time he arrives. There, he finds a ransom note from Vector demanding the moon in exchange for the girls. After Gru hands over the moon, Vector reneges on the deal, keeping the girls and the moon. This enrages Gru, who storms Vector's lair, this time successfully breaching the defenses. Vector flies off in an escape pod with the girls. Gru holds on to the exterior of the ship. He nearly falls to his death, but is rescued by Dr. Nefario piloting the same ship that Vector shrunk before.

Nefario reveals that the bigger the object, the quicker the effects of the shrink ray wear off. Very soon, the moon begins to grow and roll around inside Vector's ship, hurting him and freeing the girls. The girls see Gru outside of the ship, and Gru tells them to jump over to him. Edith and Agnes successfully make it onto the ship, but before Margo can jump, Vector grabs her. The moon rolls again and knocks Vector over, and Margo grabs onto Gru's grappling hook. Gru rescues her with the help of his minions, while the rapidly-expanding Moon wrecks Vector's controls, causing his ship to carry it back into orbit.

Gru and the girls settle down to live a happy life as a family and Vector is stranded on the Moon. The girls give a special ballet recital for Gru, his minions, and his mother, who finally tells him she is proud of him and acknowledges him to be the better parent. (copied & edited from Wikipedia)

A lovely animation. Hope you enjoy it like we did too!
