BPA concerns us because it has Estrogenic Activity (EA), meaning it mimics the hormone estrogen in the body. According to the study authors, chemicals with EA have been linked to all kinds of health problems, including early puberty in females, reduced sperm counts, altered functions of reproductive organs, obesity, altered sex-specific behaviors, and increased rates of some breast, ovarian, testicular, and prostate cancers.

BPA-free plastics are turning out to be just as dangerous as the products they’ve replaced. A peer-reviewed study published by Environmental Health Perspectives revealed that almost all plastics, no matter what type (BPA-free or not) were found to leach estrogen disruptors. In fact, some BPA-free products actually released more harmful chemicals than the original products that clearly contained bisphenol-A. (source)

So why is harmful plastic still being used?

Basically, regulating the safety of plastics is a political mess.

One glaring problem is that the laws governing chemical manufacturing do not require new chemicals to be safety-tested before they go on the market. Companies are rarely required to collect or disclose safety data, these chemicals are just presumed to be safe until proven otherwise – often after damage is already done.

Because of this, it is virtually impossible to even know the exact chemical composition of any commercially available plastic part. A plastic item like a baby bottle can contain almost 100 undisclosed chemicals, so a product labeled as BPA-free (or free of any other known toxin) may still have component parts that actually contained harmful chemicals anyway. (source)

According to Michael Green, director for the Center for Environmental Health, “Corporations that come under pressure to root out toxins often replace them with untested chemicals, which sometimes turn out to be just as hazardous.”

We all probably know that the commercial chemical BPA, or bisphenol-A, is a toxic nasty that could interrupt the endocrine system and cause all sorts of problems for our children. If you are not familiar with BPA, let me tell you what is BPA.

Bisphenol A or BPA, is a chemical produced in large quantities primarily for use in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. Here’s the kicker – it was originally designed as a synthetic form of estrogen and used in hormone replacement therapy. However, somewhere along the line scientists discovered that it could help make plastics hard and clear, and thenceforth, the floodgates were opened.

And why is BPA bad? Since BPA mimics estrogen, it can impact your endocrine system – hence the name “endocrine disruptor.” There are literally hundreds upon hundreds of research studies published in the most respectable peer-reviewed scientific journals linking this little toxic chemical to a plethora of chronic conditions; obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and reproductive abnormalities to mention a few.

Nowadays, every plastic widget is so-called BPA free. BPA free water bottles, BPA free sippy cups, BPA free baby bottles, BPA free blenders, etc. In one sense, this awareness is a pretty significant development in the right direction. However, the problem with plastics is that even those that are BPA free may still contain BPA or some other estrogen mimicking chemicals.

Yes! BPA-free plastic is also cancerous as it releases toxic without heat after several washing!

The scientific study that found "some BPA-free products actually released synthetic estrogens that were more potent than BPA," and even shares the results of lab testing on BPA-free sippy cups. A quarter of the tested cups, the kinds purchased at major retailers, tested positive for what they call "estrogenic activity."

Sounds scary, doesn't it?

The plastics study from the University of Texas-Austin recently published in the NIH journal Environmental Health Perspectives, "almost all" plastics that were tested leached synthetic estrogens, including the BPA-free products out on the market.

Is this any worse than BPA itself?

Not worse, necessarily, but not better either! The primary reason moms -- and many companies -- have moved away from BPA is the feared risks to the endocrine system. The National Toxicology Program has expressed “some concern" for effects on the brain, behavior, and prostate gland in fetuses, infants, and children exposed to BPA.

So if BPA-free products are truly leaching chemicals that are just as risky, then it stands to reason our kids are STILL at risk, despite moms' best efforts.

Where is this stuff hiding?

The short answer is in "most" BPA-free plastic, at least according to the study out of the University of Texas-Austin. More specifically, according to the researchers' tests:

5 tips on how to stay BPA free

Avoid all forms of plastic food containers whenever possible. Glass, stainless steel or porcelain should become your new best friends in the kitchen.

Avoid canned foods. That can of corn may not only be from GMO crop, it may also come with a dollop of BPA –based epoxy resin – the stuff used line the insides of most canned goods. If you have to eat from a can, there are several good BPA free options out there. Edens Foods is a popular one

Increase your consumption of raw fruits and vegetables. Eating fresh fruits and veggies enables better detoxification of numerous toxic compounds including endocrine disruptors such as BPA. Based on scientific studies, broccoli, grapefruit, and apples are a great place to start

If plastic is the only option for a particular utensil or appliance, make sure it is not marked with the 3, 6 or 7 recycle codes. These 2 codes (flexible PVC or Polycarbonate respectively) indicate a possible presence of phthalates or BPA in the plastic

Also, if you find yourself forced to use plastic food containers, avoid microwaving them at all costs. BPA is more likely to leach at higher temperatures

You may not be able to move away from all plastics because they are ubiquitous on the market, but where possible, but if you're interested in avoiding any number of chemical toxins leaching into your food and beverages, choose glass over plastic, especially when it comes to products that will come into contact with food or beverages, or those intended for pregnant women, infants and children. This applies to canned goods as well, which are a major source of BPA (and possibly other chemicals) exposure, so whenever you can, choose jarred goods over canned goods, or opt for fresh instead. Another good idea is to ditch plastic teething toys for your little ones and choose natural wood or fabric varieties instead.

To be fair, you probably can no longer completely eliminate your exposure to BPA, BPS and similar toxins (since they're likely in our air, water, and food, too) but you can certainly reduce your exposure dramatically by making informed choices like those described above.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8325546964661961670.post-7406997954368028272013-12-09T10:50:00.001+08:002013-12-09T11:07:44.748+08:00Happy Birthday

Time flies. My princess is now 4-year-old. Sometimes I just couldn't believe that my baby girl is no longer an infant but a cute, active girl. Happy Birthday, my sweetheart!

This year, we have the 1st birthday celebration for my princess in Kuching. My hubby and I planned to throw her a birthday party but my princess told me that she preferred to have it only with us. I was quite surprised on her decision as I thought kids always prefer to have big party with many other kids. Seems like I was wrong. In the end, we brought her to my parents' place to have some fun with her grandma.

As for the cake, I have failed to order a 3D Thomas and Friends birthday cake for her as it needs minimum 1-month pre-order from most of the famous bakers here. In the end, I have solved the problem by ordering a moist chocolate cake from Secret Recipe and bought her favorite Thomas and Friends toys from the Toys'R'us to place on top of the cake as decor. I am glad she is very happy with it and couldn't stop playing with her toys after the cake cutting.

I realized that this solution is better than having the 3D cake which has too much coloring and those with fondant is not really tasty.

Last year, she had an Elmo birthday cake. This year, her favorite character has changed to Thomas the train. Hmm... I wonder what will be her next favorite character next year. So unpredictable. Haha!
Plot

A group of young Muslim men from Sheffield have become radicalised and aspire to become suicide bombers. They are Omar (played by Riz Ahmed), the leading member who is deeply critical of Western society; his dim-witted friend, Waj (Kayvan Novak); Barry (Nigel Lindsay), a bad-tempered White convert to Islam; and naive Faisal (Adeel Akhtar), who tries to train crows to be used as bombers. While Omar and Waj go to a terrorist training camp in Pakistan, Barry recruits a reluctant fifth member, Hassan (Arsher Ali). The visit to the training camp ends in disaster, with Omar misfiring a rocket that kills fellow jihadists; however, he uses the experience to assert authority on his return to Britain.

The group begins acquiring materials for making improvised explosives but disagree about what to target. Barry wants to bomb a local mosque as a false flag operation in order to "radicalise the moderates", but Omar considers this idiotic. Faisal suggests blowing up a branch of Boots, but Omar doesn't think it is a worthwhile target. Hassan compromises their secrecy by allowing a neighbour (Julia Davis) into their safe house, and the team must transport their volatile explosives to a new location. Faisal accidentally blows himself up after tripping in a field, resulting in a row among the remaining four, who temporarily separate. They reconcile, however, and Omar decides to target the London Marathon.

Wearing various costumes to conceal their explosives — Omar as the Honey Monster; Waj as a man riding an ostrich; Barry as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle; and Hassan as an inverted clown — they prepare to blow themselves up. Waj expresses doubts about the rectitude of the plot, but Omar convinces him to go ahead. Hassan loses his nerve and tries to give himself up to the police, but Barry detonates his bomb using a mobile phone, killing Hassan and alerting the authorities to the remaining three. Omar realises he has led his unwitting friend, Waj, into something he does not want to do, and sets off to make him change his mind. Police attempt to shoot Omar as he mingles with other runners, but instead shoot a bystander dressed as a Wookie; prompting a lengthy discussion of whether or not a wookie is in fact a bear, and what a honey monster is, Omar eventually contacts Waj via his mobile phone, but is attacked by Barry, who swallows the phone's SIM card. However, Barry begins to choke on it, causing a passer-by to carry out the Heimlich manoeuvre and detonate his bomb.

Waj is cornered by police and takes a kebab shop hostage. Omar borrows a phone and attempts to talk Waj down. However, his call is interrupted by a police raid in which they shoot a hostage whom they mistake for the bomber. Confused, Waj proceeds to detonate his own bomb, destroying the kebab shop. Distraught, Omar walks into a nearby pharmacy and detonates his own bomb. It is revealed later that Omar's innocent and peaceful brother has been arrested and is suspected by the police to be a terrorist; that the police deflect responsibility for shooting the bystander; and that Omar and Waj killed Osama Bin Laden when Omar misfired the missile in Pakistan.

When my hubby introduced this comedy to me, I wasn't interested at the beginning. Well, it seems like I'm wrong many times by judging a book from it's cover. I slept off half way without knowing but woke up early in the morning to continue this movie. It's very funny indeed. I have enjoyed throughout the whole story as the black comedy is kind of unique. The jokes are very different from the usual comedy, it can make my hubby and I laughed a lot.

Early life

Clayderman was born in Paris, France, and learned piano from his father, a piano teacher.
At the age of twelve, he was accepted into the Conservatoire de Paris,
where he won great acclaim in his later adolescent years. Financial
difficulties, precipitated by his father's illness, forestalled a
promising career as a classical pianist. So in order to earn a living,
he found work as a bank clerk and as an accompanist to contemporary
bands. He accompanied French singers such as Johnny Hallyday, Thierry Le Luron, and Michel Sardou.

Clayderman has recorded over 1,300 melodies, and has created a new
romantic style through a repertoire which combines his trademark
originals with classics and pop standards. He has devoted much of his
time to performing concerts, going as far as playing 200 shows in 250
days. He has clocked up worldwide record sales of approximately 70 million, as of 2006, and has 267 gold and 70 platinum discs to his credit. He is popular in Asia and is noted by the Guinness Book of World Records as being "the most successful pianist in the world".

He lives in Saint-Ouen (near Paris) with his wife Christine, his son Peter, and his daughter Maud. (Copied and edited from Wikipedia)

We are still working on the fruits and vegetable. Well, for those who wants to teach your kids some languages that we (as parents) don't know either, we have to be humble, patient and learn together with them. My memory is not as good as my daughter. Her learning progress is so much faster compare to mine yet I'm trying my best to learn so that I can be her learning companion. We will test each other to kill times in the car or while waiting for our food in the restaurant. I found that it's a very fun revision game for both of us.

For Chinese characters, I'm surprised that she did self learn the numbers from zero to twenty and colours. Thanks for the app on the iPad. Hahaha!

So for the Chinese characters that she can recognize:
Mathematics:
She can count from 0 to 100. Doing addition and subtraction. She can memorize the multiplication table for x2, x3 and x4. Not so confident in x4 yet.

Solar system:
She can memorize all the planets name, such as sun, Mars, Venus, Earth, Moon, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Mercury, asteroids, comet, etc.
(I am not good in flags and names of countries. So I tried to learn together with her while teaching her at the same time. In the end, she is a faster learner than me. I can feel the stress now. Surrender!)

Writing:
Great improvement in writing skill. She can follow the dotted line well. No problem in writing A to Z and all numbers. She is trained in basic strokes and Chinese characters too. As for number 8, she is still not so confident yet.

Coloring:
I feel so happy that she can color better now. She can avoid to color out from the line and even mix colors. Her favorite sequence of her colors are always rainbow colors. All the colorful things that she owns must be arranged according to the rainbow color.

Spelling:
My princess has very good memory. It helps her in reading, learning and spelling too. She can spell out the words by phonetics or by her pictorial memory. Previously I did teach her how to grab the spelling skills from 3 letters, 4 letters and 5 letters words. Seems like she has grabbed the technique and feel fun to spell out the words by herself.

Songs that she can sing:
- Chuck & Friends - Unidentified rolling object
- Rabbit Ears

.... etc. I think I have to stop listing the books that she had read. I have to agree what my hubby said, vocabulary that she had learn are more important than the number of books she had read. I just keep buying books and don't have the time to list down anymore.

Let me try to recall what are the new words that she has learn:
1) syringe
2) reflex hammer
3) thermometer
4) atmosphere
5) measurement
6) complain
7) introduction
8) accidentally
9) etc

But the problem is, I can't keep track on her vocabulary too. She is
good in phonetic so basically she can pronounce all the new words. For all the words that she picks up from the books are uncountable. My girl will read the signboards, notice, advertisement, menu, newspapers, magazines etc whatever words that can be seen by her when we go out. Basically we can't lie to her as she can read many instructions and know what is going on. For example, she will read out the signboard and tell us that's the toy's shop and she wants to go there.

Lately I have bought her many workbooks (Maths, English, Coloring, Chinese, IQ quiz etc) and guide her from time to time. She can read instructions and do the exercises by herself. I told my hubby "Teach your kid how to read, throw a workbook to her and we can have some peace!" :P

Well, it's true. Sometimes I was too lazy to read all the instructions as she can finish one whole workbook in one session. She will correct me if I have taught her wrongly, such as I told her to circle the correct answer but the instruction says to cross out the wrong answer. *sweat. I promised to be more careful next time.

Would like to recommend the books below:
1) Reading Success Moral Story Book Series
- There are 2 stories in a book which comes with some after story exercises. The kid will be able to answer all questions if they understand the story. Total of 10 books in a set. Bilingual (English and Mandarin)

2) BrainQuest Workbooks Series

- Full color workbook which comes with stickers. My daughter just can't stop doing the exercises so that she can earn the stickers behind the book.

- Each book covers many topics. For Pre-K (P) has topics like ABCs, 123s, Phonics, Vocabulary, Shapes and Colors, Sorting and Matching, My World, Science, Fun and Games.

Minion, actually means a follower devoted to serve his/her master/mistress relentlessly. Some sort like slaves?

Anyway, my 3-year-old princess has fallen in love with the Minions from the first day she watched this cartoon. I was surprised to see her reaction on this animation as she hardly go crazy for any other cartoon except Elmo and some muppets from Sesame Street.

The film focus on the Minions which are yellow henchmen who have existed since the beginning of time. Their existence as artificial beings and are made from a single strand of mutated DNA. The minions wear metal goggles accommodating to their number of eyes with black gloves. ( There are one or two eyes minions and each of them play a special characteristics in the film. ) They enjoy playing and take great care of Agnes, Edith and Margo as well as toilet paper.

Minions love bananas, potatoes and apples (or “papples”, as they call them). For them, anything related or to do with butts is extremely funny. They are quite loving and passionate when they are looking after the girls.

I love the way they laugh actually. It's good to see that they can easily get happy and contented, but sometimes they can be quite 'violent' too. They will just punch or hit each other when they are frustrated.

My daughter learned to pick up 'Minion language' phrases in the movies like:
“Ba-boy”means ”toy.”
“Bi-do” means ”I’m sorry.”
“Para tú” means roughly “for you.”
“La boda”means “marriage.”
“Hana, Dul, Sae” means “One, Two, Three”.

Can you speak Minion language too? ^^
At first, I thought by using the USB connector will do but I was wrong. I had tried Samsung Kies and I found out it's pretty frustrating, especially when it tried to get me updating my Kies software (which took for ages to complete) and while updating in progress, I wouldn't be able to use Kies to do anything. So I decided to save my precious time and look for some other option.

Luckily I have found a great FREE app that solves my problem ~ AirDroid.

AirDroid is very simple and user friendly! Just follow the steps below and you can transfer all your files, messages, music, video, ringtones etc from your smartphone to computer vice versa in just a few steps without using any USB connector, however Internet connection will be needed!

Step 1:
Go to Play Store and search for "AirDroid" app.

Step 2:
Download and install the app.

Step 3:
Click on the app and register accordingly.

Step 4:
Two website links will be showed on your Smartphone screen, choose either one and use your PC/Notebook to visit the link website.

Step 5:
That's it! Download or Upload whatever files you like! ^^

Anyway, if your Internet connection is slow and unstable. you might get frustrated too. You will have to reconnect again and again due to the unstable Internet connection. So good luck! Due to the Chinese tradition culture, we are not allow to celebrate nor giving out ang pow to others as my late father-in-law just passed away for less than a year.

We usually have to travel to Raub, Pahang and spend our Chinese New Year there for several days. Now the house in Raub is vacant and we can stay away from the scary traffic jam along the KL - Pahang highway.

For me, the best new year celebration is to gather with family members, eat and rest well. The best part is, I have the opportunity to shop for what I want this time. Hahaha! Overjoyed!

Other than not going back to Raub, we still giving and receiving ang pows. We have big meals in restaurant daily and also 'lo yu sang' for many times. If the 'yu sang' really can give me best of luck and great fortune, I will definitely be a multi millionaire this year.

My hubby and I are very pleased to see my girl plays happily everyday with her cousins. They can dig out many toys and play non-stop. However they will behave well and play with their own itouch in the restaurant.
For my family members and friends who know me well enough will know I have problem in swallowing medicine either in liquid or pills form. I rather have injection or suffer till I reach my limit. It's rather silly but I am phobia towards medication though I started swallowing many types of pills since young due to weak and lousy health condition.

During my last year June visit to Singapore, my eldest sister has recommended me this essential oil. I was skeptical and unwilling to try. She just applied on the back of my ears and my runny nose just recovered. I can't believe and was so impressed with the effective essential oil!

I was suffering with flu for a week plus. My daughter and I just took turn to fall sick. After trying the essential oil, I started to surf online and did more research on this product. After reading many testimonials and useful research information, I decided to buy the Family Physician Kit which I am glad I did.

There are many great testimonials and youtube video clips about this 100% pure therapeutic essential oil. I decided to make my purchase after I watched the red blood cell experiment done by Dr. Hills. You can view the video here.

It has been a year since I have bought this Family Physician Kit. I feel so thankful to my sister who has introduced this great alternative treatment for me and my family. I have stopped taking paracetamol during fever, cough syrup during cough, painkiller when i have gastric problem, ventolin when my asthma attack etc. Yes. The essential oils have replaced my medicine cabinet and they work well and faster too. This is a super great news for me as I hate taking medicine, always having problem in swallowing those bitter pills which always get stuck on my throat.

So, if you have the same problem like me, or have some doubts in letting your young children taking too much medicine, especially anti-biotics, kindly find out more about this natural health product.

It has the same name as the one in Miri.

At first I thought they are own by the same boss who operates two Citrus restaurants and one Silverspoon restaurant in Miri but later I found out I was wrong. (Just met and chatted with the boss today. ) There is no trademark for the name so this coincidence can happen.

Citrus was my favourite restaurant 3 years ago but due to the changed of locality and staff/chef, the food and service quality have dropped drastically.

The last visit of mine to Citrus restaurant was very unpleasant. I have found a strain of hair in my food. It was extremely disgusting as I only saw it after finishing half portion. The waiter didn't apologise after I showed him the hair. He just quickly took my plate into the kitchen. When he returned, he asked whether I want to have a new lunch set. I had turned down as my appetite was gone. They did waive on that order but I felt that they were not sorry about it. Anyway, I did SMS the boss as I felt that this hygienic matter is serious especially he is operating food and beverage buisiness. The boss did reply that he is sorry and will be more careful in future.

I have banned this restaurant in my list, at least for the time being. I can't accept my food has hair or other insects in it. I hope they can improve so that I can visit them again in near future?!

There's one Silverspoon restaurant in Miri too. I have tried and doesn't like their food either. The toilet was dirty and the food quality was bad. I understand it's never easy to manage the staff if they are not motivated. So overall, I don't have much interest to try again.

However, since we were already in the restaurant at Publika, we decided to sit down and have a try. Hoping KL and Miri's standard can be different.

We had ordered:
1) caesar salad- too much mayonnaise;
2) beef steak - too dry and hard, overcook though we ordered medium well;
3) duck pizza - turned up to be super salty.

The pricing are not cheap. We were quite disappointed with the food. This has proven that not all expensive food equals to delicious food.

We will not step in this restaurant again in near future. Gonna give other restaurants a chance.

My princess has received this gift from my hubby's friend from Hong Kong at the age of 2. Although she was able to read many words and even answer the questions from this laptop at that time, she doesn't like/appreciate this gift at all.

This cute laptop was kept in the store for about a year and finally I took out last night to test the water. We are delighted that our princess is now ready for it. She enjoyed playing the quizzes and finished many questions from the provided workbook by pressing the keyboard and controlling the mouse.

Seems like we really have to follow the given instructions on the box which stated it's for kids age 3 and above. Hahaha!

After our KL trip, my princess has been reminding me about the Sesame Street clay art project we plan to do at home.

Finally I have kept my promise and had a wonderful private clay art lesson with her.

Before this afternoon lesson with her, I have tried doing clay Elmo and Cookie Monster alone in the morning when she was in her school. Well, it was my first Resin Clay art in my life so I have to make sure I can do it well before I teach my princess. Very responsible and professional teacher huh?! Lol.

Actually it is quite easy. For Elmo, we need clay as follow:
-red for his round/oval face
-orange for the oval nose
- white for the eyes
- black for the eye pupils and big semi-circle shaped mouth.

As for Cookie Monster, we need:
- blue for his round/ oval face
- white for the eyes
- black for the eye pupils and big semi-circle shaped mouth.

For the furry look, we can either poke many holes or use scissors to cut. These projects are suitable for beginners. Well, practice make perfect. ^^
